The goal of Sartorium
Every house worth knowing, on equal footing
Sartorium exists to end a quiet unfairness: that the size of a house's marketing budget, and not the quality of its work, decides who ever gets to discover it. We are building one curated place where the best clothing houses in the world stand side by side — the one-person atelier and the brand with fifty stores — and where anyone who has begun to care about how their clothes are made can find them.
The good houses are invisible
The people who make the finest clothes are rarely the people who are easiest to find. They have no marketing department, a quiet presence online, sometimes no website at all. Search engines reward whoever spends the most on being found, so the loudest names rise and the best small workshops sink out of sight. The knowledge of who is genuinely worth your time lives in a handful of forums and in the heads of a few enthusiasts, closed to almost everyone else. A beginner does not know the names, and even someone who knows a few has no way to see who else is out there.
The great equalizer
Talent should not depend on a marketing budget. A house nobody has heard of is not a lesser house; it is a house nobody has been shown. That is the one thing Sartorium sets out to change. A one-person atelier can have the same page and the same pin as the largest house. In the map's list, houses that are subscribed or on their trial, and whose page is complete, come first, then all the others. Within each group the order is alphabetical, and the plan a house is on makes no difference to it.
What Sartorium is
At its heart Sartorium is a curated map of clothing houses around the world, where each one can build its own page: who it is, what it makes, and every way to reach it. It spans the whole range of how a garment can be made, from second-hand and ready-to-wear through made-to-order and made-to-measure to full bespoke. The map and the house pages are for members: an account, which is free, is the price of reading a directory that took years to gather and that no one else has. The account is not a toll; it is what keeps the collection a members' asset rather than a dataset for anyone to copy.
For anyone who loves clothes
Sartorium is built for the whole spectrum of people who care about clothing: the complete beginner and the lifelong enthusiast, the person with very little to spend and the one commissioning a bespoke suit every month. Because it covers second-hand and ready-to-wear as seriously as it covers bespoke, nobody is priced out of looking, and nobody has to already know the names to begin. You start from where do I even look, and end with a real house, near you or anywhere in the world, that you can walk straight up to.
For the houses
For a house, Sartorium is a showcase and a source of reach it could not buy on its own: a page it controls and a pin on a map that members open on purpose to find houses like it. It is also, for the first time, the proof of that reach, how many members viewed the page and clicked through to the house's own site, its Instagram, its door. Joining is a subscription, with a fourteen-day free trial. The offers are set out on the Pricing page.
How we curate
Every house on Sartorium is there because it was chosen, not because it paid or filled in a form. The directory is assembled and checked by hand, house by house, which is slow and is the point: the value is in what has been left out as much as in what is kept. A house can claim the page that is already there, or ask to be added, and the standard is the same either way, the quality of the work and never the size of the name.
What we do not do
We would rather say less and mean it. Sartorium does not sell your data and shows no advertising. We do not promise features that do not yet exist. Trunk shows, when a travelling house visits your city, are one feature for the minority of houses that travel, not the heart of what we do. And the numbers on the site are always the real, current ones, never a flattering estimate.
The showcase you earn
Sartorium is a closed platform on purpose, and a generous one on purpose. Closed, so the collection stays worth having; generous, so that anyone willing to sign up can read all of it, free. If you love clothes, this is the door in. If you make them, this is where you are seen.
